Spartan Race is the world's largest obstacle course racing (OCR) series, founded in 2010 by Joe De Sena in Pittsfield, Vermont, USA. Spartan organizes hundreds of events per year in 40+ countries. Athletes run point-to-point or lap courses of fixed distances and complete obstacles along the way (walls, rope climbs, spear throw, bucket carry, barbed wire crawl, monkey bars, and more). Failing an obstacle typically costs a 30-burpee penalty in competitive heats. Spartan also owns Tough Mudder and the DEKA indoor fitness-racing brand. ## Race formats and distances - Sprint: about 5 km with about 20 obstacles. The recommended entry point for first-time racers. - Super: about 10 km with about 25 obstacles. A step up in endurance and obstacle density. - Beast: about 21 km (half-marathon distance) with about 30 obstacles. Completing it is the hardest leg of the Trifecta. - Ultra: 50 km or more, generally two laps of the Beast course with additional obstacles and time cutoffs. - Stadion: a ~5 km sprint-style race held inside stadiums (baseball and football venues), no mud, all concrete and stairs. - Trail: trail-running races on Spartan venues without obstacles, from 10 km to 21 km. - Kids: races from 0.8 km to 3.2 km for children aged roughly 4-13, held at most event weekends. - Hurricane Heat: a team-based, non-timed endurance event led by Spartan staff, usually 3-4 hours. - Death Race: Spartan's most extreme multi-day endurance event, held in Pittsfield, Vermont. Heats within a race are grouped as: Elite (prize money, strictest rules), Age Group (competitive by age bracket), and Open (any pace, helping other racers allowed). ## The Trifecta Finish a Sprint, a Super, and a Beast (or longer) within one calendar year to earn the Spartan Trifecta medal. Each finisher medal includes a wedge piece; the three wedges combine into the Trifecta medal. Multiple Trifectas can be earned per year.
